Dr. Lajos Smidt, a hospital manager and chief surgeon, donated his entire private collection to the general public when he retired. He had been collecting for over six decades and had acquire over 40 000 items. This unique life-work consisting of many thousands of objects is located on three floors of the Smidt Museum. In the museum visitors can be see displays of: Archaeology, military history, weapons, numismatic materials, medical history, glass objects, rare books and manuscripts, furniture, paintings, glassware, porcelain, musical instruments, historical costumes and the watch collection. The museum is situated close to the bishop’s palace. The building was originally a grammar school, the first in Szombathely and dates from the 18th century. It was rebuilt to give home to the collection. The last remaining tramcar of Szombathely-which ran between 1897 and 1974-is on display in the garden of the museum.
